The open source and MySQL community started getting worried after MySQL acquisition by Sun Microsystems, but after that Oracle acquired Sun Microsystems the future of MySQL become unclear. Will Oracle continue to support MySQL or shutdown one of its biggest competitors ? First we saw Michael “Monty” Widenius, the creator of MySQL database forking his own database and launching MariaDB with a company behind it called the Monty Program. In addition to the core functionality of MySQL, MariaDB offers a rich set of feature enhancements including alternate storage engines, server optimizations, and patches. Then recently appeared Ulf Sandberg, ex-senior VP of global services at MySQL, with SkySQL a company providing enterprise class support & services for the MySQL ecosystem. According to the company website all core members of SkySQL are former employees of MySQL. In addition they are currently hiring in all areas, including support, consulting, training, marketing & sales.

After over 40,000 downloads of its previous version in just over six short months, the XOOPS Project , one of world’s leading Open Source CMS (Content Management System), has released a new version of its award winning software – XOOPS 2.4.5. This release is focused mainly on bug fixes and cleaning up conflicts in previous versions of the XOOPS 2.4 series. Some areas, including tinyMCE/ckeditor editors, have been improved. The main features of the 2.4 series are new user friendly Admin GUI new mechanism to modularize and extend Core via Preloads central support for jQuery improved Installer Themeable Administration area support for WYSIWYG Editors: CKEditor, wymeditor, Xinha, and Spaw2 new System License Key Support to PHP 5.3 XOOPS has not only a very loyal base, as the number of downloads suggests, but is also highly respected in the industry. In 2008 it was a finalist in SourceForge Community Awards and in the 2008 and 2009 CMS Awards by Packt Publishing. It also won the prestigious 2008 China Open Source Software Contest Award and the 2009 Grand Prize in OSS Challenge in Korea.

Hot on the heels of Tiki 5.0, the Tiki community is proud to announce the releases of Tiki 4.3 and 3.6LTS. Both versions included primarily fixes and patches. Users of Tiki 4.x and 3.x are encouraged to upgraded to this new release. Tiki 3.6 is the Long Term Support (LTS) version and will continue to receive patches, fixes, and security updates.

I have decided that after being on the web for 15 years constantly as papamike that I’m shutting the doors. I am disabled and find it harder and harder to maintain even a small semblance of interest in designing RN themes or for that matter to even keep the website going. It doesn’t bother me at all that I am closing things down, it’s just something that happens. As in my native language (Scottish) I say “Slán go fóill” Goodbye for now …

A key component to any Membership Site is finding a way for your members to interact with each other and with you. Typically, a forum is a great way to do this and encourages folks to share questions, answers, tips, etc. with the community as a whole.
